EarthWeek 2012 Information

EarthWeek 2012 : March 28-30, Student Union

EarthWeek is a three-day conference organized by students from the University of Arizona's School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES). Components include El Dia del Agua, GeoDaze, and AIR, as well as days hosted by SWES and LTRR. During EarthWeek, students from SEES and SEES-related fields present their research in oral and poster presentations. EarthWeek also hosts interdisciplinary sessions in which students from different departments present research on specific topics, such as GIS & Spatial Analysis, Southwestern Climate, and Environmental Hazards.

This year's plenary speaker is Susan Joy Hassol. Her talk, titled "Telling the Climate Change Story," will take place at 4:00 pm on Thursday, March 29.

Plenary Session

EarthWeek 2012 will be the first EarthWeek to host a plenary session comprised of student oral presentations. This year's theme is "Climate in the Southwest." This session will showcase the southwestern climatology research of graduate students from SEES. One student speaker will be selected from each unit within SEES. While researchers are expected to present a range of methodologies and topics, the presented research should be themed on climate change in the southwestern United States and/or reconstructing climate in the southwestern United States. A prize will be awarded to the best overall speaker of the session.

This session will take place from 2:30-3:45 pm on Thursday, March 29.

This year, LTRR is hosting a series of interdisciplinary sessions based on specific topics. Each of these oral presentation sessions will take place on Wednesday, March 28. The topics are as follows:

GIS and Spatial Analysis
Presentations that contain a substantial component of spatial analysis, geovisualization, or GIS on any research topic are welcome in this session.

Hazards, Fire, and Drought
Changing climate and altered disturbance regimes have reshaped risk and hazards in a number of ways. This session seeks abstracts that address risk and hazards as well as those that cover vulnerability and adaptation to risk and hazard.

Large Dataset Management
Large datasets pose unique problems for researchers in terms of data management, processing, analysis, and archiving. Emerging tools and techniques support efficient use and manipulation of large datasets. Papers in this session should cover not only research and results but should also discuss ways for handling large, complex datasets.

Modeling and Empirics
This session welcomes abstracts that blend empirical research methods with modeling in any form and on any topic. Empirics can be used to parameterize models, models can be used to expand empirical data, and the relationship between the two can be even more complex.

Research Serving Society
This session will feature papers that are related to any issue of pertinence to society at large.

When you complete the abstract submission form, you are welcome to note your interest in participating in any of the above sessions that relate to your research.

Announcements

The Arizona Section of the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists and the Southern Arizona Chapter of the Arizona Hydrological Society are hosting a special event for students on Monday, April 2, 2012. Student Night intends to provide an opportunity for students to learn more about careers in the industry as well as present their research to members of the professional community. Please see their website for more details. Abstracts for presentations are due March 9. The deadline to RSVP for this event is March 16.

Thanks to everyone who made the EarthWeek Trivia Night a success!

Abstract submission for EarthWeek 2012 is now closed. Please contact a symposium representative if you have questions regarding EarthWeek abstracts.
